The $150 million ‘Aviation Mechanic’ salary is going to be worth more than $150m after the US Federal Aviation Administration ruled that it can now be awarded.
The aviation industry has been waiting for the FAA to approve the $150M salary awarded to a retired aviation mechanic who worked on the 777X in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The salary was first revealed by aviation blogger FlightStats, which claimed that the mechanic earned $150,000 per year.
However, the FAA now says that the pilot and co-pilot will receive $150k, meaning that the total will now reach more than a half billion dollars.
The Federal Aviation Regulations states that the salary can be awarded for three years, and the FAA has yet to rule on the other two.
The FAA said that the agency would not make any further comments on the award, as the final decision has not yet been made.
Aviation industry watchers were quick to express their disappointment.
“If you want to be an aviator you need to be able to earn at least $150K per year,” wrote one user on the site.
“This isn’t even close to being a credible way to earn that much.
If you’re a pilot and a mechanic you should be earning more than that, and not be getting that amount.”
“I’m not saying they shouldn’t be making that amount, but I’m saying that it should be reasonable,” another wrote.
“I can see how some of the other guys on this job earn more than the minimum wage.”
Aviation industry experts were also critical of the FAA.
“As far as a pilot’s salary goes, it should go to someone who has done the work that you are looking at,” said aviation industry consultant and professor of aviation at the University of Colorado Denver, John Ritter.
“That’s a reasonable amount of money.”
“We have a lot of aviation employees who have been working on airplanes for 30 years,” said Ritter, who was a pilot himself for nearly 20 years.
“So I think that a lot is reasonable.
We have to take into account how much time and effort you put into the job.”
“There are no good people out there,” said another user.
“The only people who should make $150/hour are pilots who have a really good reputation, and that’s what you get.”
“These people who do that work should not be earning anything,” another user wrote.
