‘I am not going to stay here’: Palestinian man, family of five, in shock after Israeli airstrike on their home
An Israeli airstrike has killed five Palestinian children and their mother in the occupied West Bank, officials said Saturday.
A military spokesman said a “humanitarian” strike hit a house in the village of Khader in the northern West Bank on Saturday.
No Israeli casualties were reported.
The military said the Israeli air force targeted an al-Qassam Brigades militant group.
The family of the five was in the home when the airstrike took place, said Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, a spokesman for the Israeli military.
He said it was unclear whether the attack was a response to an attack earlier that day by the Palestinian militant group that targeted the home.
The strike targeted the family’s home in Khader and destroyed the family car, which belonged to the family.
It’s a humanitarian strike, Mordechay said.
He said Israeli military officials would not say whether the strike was retaliation to an earlier strike by the group that attacked the home, which killed a number of Palestinians.
Israeli authorities have not yet commented on the strike.
The United Nations has called for an investigation into the strike, saying the attack on the family violated the Fourth Geneva Convention, which requires parties to use all necessary means to avoid attacks against civilians.UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Israel’s use of deadly force in the West Bank against Palestinians was “an affront to the international community’s principles of proportionality and accountability.”
He called on the international body to “ensure accountability for the actions of Israeli forces.”
The Israeli military has repeatedly denied carrying out attacks that hit Palestinian homes.
Israel has long denied using excessive force against Palestinians, but Human Rights Watch says that it has killed more than 2,000 Palestinians in Israeli attacks in the past three years, including at least 50 civilians.
Israeli officials have said they seek to deter Palestinian attacks by targeting militant groups.
