US airlines: We need to be ready for ‘post-aircraft’ conflict
Airlines have warned that they will be more vulnerable to a potential attack on the US aviation system if the country is to remain a global power.
In a report to Congress, the airlines association for commercial airlines said that if a conflict erupted between the US and Russia, the country could lose billions of dollars of economic benefits.
The American Airlines Association, which represents about 500 airlines, said that it would look at options to help the US remain a regional power if a war broke out between the two nations.
“We are looking at options in order to continue to operate in a manner that ensures that we can provide the services to our customers,” American Airlines CEO Gary Kelly told reporters in a statement.
Kelly also said that he believes the US government will take steps to protect the aviation system.
“If the United States were to become a nuclear-armed state, we would want to know that we had a mechanism in place to respond to those actions that we were prepared to take, and that the people that we represent would be able to stand up and say, ‘We don’t need your help, we need to take care of ourselves’,” he said.
In the event of a conflict between the United Kingdom and Russia over Crimea, Kelly said that the US would be ready to “do whatever it takes to protect our nation”.
Kelly said that after the election of President Donald Trump, the US needed to have “a strategy in place” in order for the country to remain “a global leader”.
“The American people have spoken, and they want us to be a global leader, and we have a responsibility to act, not just to the world but to ourselves,” Kelly said.
“We must not lose our ability to do what is right for our country and our people, and our ability as a country to have a world-class system of commerce.”
Kelly said the US is not yet prepared to launch a full-scale attack on Russia, as the situation on the ground is very difficult.
“What we’re seeing is that the Russian government is making some of the decisions on what kind of response they want to take,” Kelly added.
“I think that if you look at what is going on in Crimea, the Russian military is taking these decisions in the context of what is a very uncertain situation, and so they are putting in place their response.”
I think we are in a very dangerous situation.
